NEW YORK — Drug stores continue to solidify their reputations as health care destinations, and the trend toward mineral makeup fits in perfectly with that positioning. Although mineral makeup has been used for ages to add color and beauty to the face, the latest wave of such products has a particularly strong health component. Mineral makeup is based on hypoallergenic loose powder, contains no alcohol, perfumes, dyes or preservatives, and naturally nourishes the skin.
Nowhere perhaps do the health and beauty offerings of drug chains converge more than in the skin care category. Its the perfect category for a drug store, one chain drug category manager says of skin care. The products are good for our customers in terms of protecting their skin from damage -even from cancer–and vital to their looks. A skin care product is a health product and a beauty product at the same time. Its our stock in trade. It is no wonder that leading drug chains have made skin care a major area of focus. At Rite Aid Corp. chairman, president and chief executive officer Mary Sammons noted in June that a new marketing program on summer skin care had already been implemented in the retailers just acquired Brooks Eckerd Pharmacy stores. CVS/Caremark Corp. and Walgreen Co. for their part have made a point of highlighting their proprietary skin care lines. At CVS an antiaging line, Skin Effects by Dr. Jeffrey Dover, is among the chains exclusive brands that have 60 points of margin and that are driving the business, president and CEO Tom Ryan said earlier this year. The products are only available at CVS, he stressed.

Of the 12 patients who survived, ten received fractures of the limbs and pelvis. One individual sustained a skull fracture with intracerebral bleeding and was still comatose at follow-up. Other injuries that were sustained by these individuals included nerve damage and ligament injury. All of the 12 patients who survived required hospitalization and eight required surgery. (JAMA, November 11, 1988, vol. 260, p. 2697.)
Kosher Vending Industries LLC and KRh Thermal Systems Inc. are testing new Kosher Vending machines in 25 locations throughout New Jersey and New York. The company is looking to place the Kosher Vending machines in airports, schools, hotels, casinos and hospitals.
If you think of vending machines simply as dispensers of soft drinks, snack foods, and items such as combs and painkillers, Kent Savage wants you to think again.Savage is president of Cincinnati-based Vertex Technologies, Inc., and he sees vending machines as miniature retail stores for sales and distribution of everything from cameras and blue jeans to tools and manufacturing equipment. The skys the limit, he says.Since that trip, Savages company has been developing vending machines for both the industrial and retail markets. Businesses can benefit from vending machines because they distribute or sell items without sales workers having to be present.

That trend is evident in Phar-Mor Inc.s newest prototype, a 50,000-square-foot unit with a large beauty care department the deep-discount drug chain unveiled earlier this year. Phar-Mor opened a version of the prototype on the East Coast this summer, marking its first foray into New Jersey. The new store, in Moorestown, is doing some interesting things with skin care.Open-mindedness toward innovation in skin care merchandising is not limited to the chain drug channel. Supermarket retailers, long the also-rans among mass marketers in the category, are beginning to experiment with larger skin care departments and higher-end products. One regional Sunbelt chain plans to increase its skin care mix by a third before the end of this year, with higher-priced facial products it had not carried before accounting for almost all the increase. The retailer also plans to experiment with free-standing skin care displays, end-caps and promotional price reductions this winter. It will double the amount of space devoted to the category in most of its stores and begin running ads devoted solely to skin care for the first time.
The health and beauty market encompasses a wide variety of sectors and for the purposes of this research incorporates haircare, oral care, shaving products, deodorants and body sprays, and personal washing items. The categories, together, are worth more than 2.2bn [pounds sterling] annually. The second largest category was deodorants and body sprays, and once again they all performed well with deodorants and male body sprays rising 8% each, while female body sprays rose 3%. The best performer was Lynx male body spray worth 50m [pounds sterling] and rising 11%. To put this figure into perspective, the second player in this sector was Addiction at 3m [pounds sterling]. Sure Body Responsive was the leading deodorant brand at 47m [pounds sterling], up 30%. Right Guard followed at 29m [pounds sterling]. Female body sprays were led by impulse at 23m [pounds sterling], and up 10% this year.

This week we met up with Sarah Burrow, manager of the new mezze-style restaurant Starters and Puds on Shakespeare Street in Newcastle City centre. As this is a family-run business, Sarah, 25, has been working hard to ensure everything was perfect in time for the launch. Though Sarah is a self confessed shopaholic, she has had no time to update her wardrobe for summer. We decided that this had to be rectified straightaway.
Durham will play host to a fashion show with a difference next week as models from the region strut their stuff in the latest Fairtrade fashions. The event, featuring 35 models wearing Fairtrade clothes from the World Gateway Shop in St Nicholas Church, Durham, will take place in the Town Hall in the Market Place and will showcase Fairtrade fashions from India, South America and Nepal. Students at Durham University will be organising the fashion show.

Black Chandelier is the clothing manufacturer and retailer for high-end apparel and gifts created by fashion designer Jared Gold.
People often ask me, “how relevant is the catwalk to the clothes most people actually wear?” As the spring/summer 97 round of shows gets under way, with London officially starting tomorrow, Milan next, then Paris and New York, the answer is that without designer level fashion, high street fashion would have no impetus to move forward. The clothes you see here are all available at a shopping centre or street near you, at prices that most people can afford. Yet they all owe their origins to the catwalks. Occasionally, a dress or shirt will be shamelessly copied. But on the whole, the high street looks to the catwalk for inspiration - for a mood or a look, if not an exact pocket detail or neckline. This autumn, the influence of the catwalks on the high street is as pronounced as ever. Walk into Miss Selfridge and you will be hit by a capsule collection of brightly coloured, zig-zag-patterned knitwear, a reflection of the Italian designer Missonis resurgence as a label to die for. Missonis knits are hand-crafted, life investment pieces with, of course, price tags to match. But if you want the look without the quality or the third mortgage, a cropped cotton/viscose Missoni-look sweater for pounds 25 is an effective one-season buy, guaranteed to update last winters wardrobe. Likewise, Gucci, the Italian label that has recently been resurrected from being synonymous with Eighties status dressing to the ultimate in high fashion. There is no suggestion that anyone would mistake the Gucci “look” for the real thing. A pure cashmere coat by the esteemed label is manufactured and tailored with absolute precision. To compare it with a coat of roughly similar design by Warehouse would be like comparing a Lamborghini to a Vauxhall Cavalier. Both are perfectly functional cars, but there the similarity ends. You get what you pay for. Gucci is in a league of its own; and the cream, pure wool, fake-fur-trimmed coat you see here is worth every one of its pounds 160. Another strong look for this autumn comes from New York and Ralph Lauren. The designer, who opens a flagship store in London later this year, took his influence from a street in London: Savile Row. When Claudia Schiffer walked down the runway in a midnight blue velvet tailored suit with shirt and gold tie, scores of fashion editors imagined themselves in her place. Of course, Ralph Lauren does not hold a monopoly on velvet suits. And Next might just as easily taken their inspiration from the Row as well. While the designer version can be altered to look as though it was made for you, out of the most luxurious silk velvet, Nexts suit costs a fraction of the price, at under pounds 150. And of course, good old mail order stalwart Racing Green has come up with the perfect fitted shirt, and its as much of a classic as the Ralph Lauren de luxe original. Back in Milan, Prada has been setting the pace, along with Gucci, for the past few seasons. The key look is minimal styling with quirky Seventies house-beautiful prints. For the Prada aficionado, there is no point if the label is not hand-sewn with the revered Milanese logo. But for anyone who just happens to like the abstract print look, there are numerous hommages on the high street. The best comes from Jane Norman, a family-run business owned by two sisters. They pride themselves on their awareness of catwalk trends. For them, the catwalk is extremely important. They respond to supplying and satisfying public demand, giving increasingly trend aware women catwalk looks at high street prices. The shirt dress pictured here hits just the right note. The transition from catwalk to high street does not always happen within the same season. Some trends take a while to filter through. The tiger- print kaftans from Dolce e Gabbanas last collection are no longer available in their Sloane Street store, but they have only just made their mark on the shop floor at the French chain Kookai. And for evening, the cowl- necked tiger-print tunic is a good buy, and will make as much of a statement across a crowded bar as the designer version. IT STARTED as a small dress shop and a gun store in a Stockholm suburb, inspired by cheap post-war American fashion. Almost 50 years later, the fashion company HM is poised to overtake Marks Spencer as Europes largest clothing retailer. It is all a far cry from 1947 when a humble salesman called Erling Persson went to America and was impressed by the low-cost clothing stores he saw there. He returned to Sweden and opened a shop called Hennes (meaning “hers” in Swedish) in the Stockholm suburb, with the slogan “fashion and quality at the best price”. The company grew slowly through the 1960s and opened its first store in Britain in 1978. It had a reputation for providing good, cheap, if slightly unadventurous, high street fashion. But in 1998, Mr Persson handed control of the company over to his son Stefan, and suddenly the profile of HM began to rise through word of mouth and increased mentions on the fashion pages of glossy magazines.

Vending MachineVending accounts for a significant portion of the sales and profits of beverage bottlers and snack makers. In 2000, vending machines generated 14% of total foodservice sales in venues such as college campuses, factories, businesses, hospitals, and schools. Bottlers pay colleges, schools, and other institutions millions of dollars for exclusive rights to place vending machines on campuses. Vended soft drink sales may represent only as much as 15% of a bottlers total yearly sales, but that same volume could easily account for half of their annual profits.
Beverages in the machines must be 100% juice, milk, or water and cannot contain artificial colors or sweeteners.

Britains charity shops face an uncertain future due to the explosion of deep-discounting high street fashion stores like Primark and Matalan and supermarket fashion lines. The Association of Charity Shops annual conference this week will set a challenge for future survival: how to persuade customers to buy second-hand clothes for the same price as new ones. “The upside is that if they buy, say, three new t-shirts for (pounds) 10, they are likely to be throwing something else out. That means they have more to donate, but we just have to keep up interest from people wanting to buy from us. We have to diversify all the time.”

To come up with a different image no matter what it takes For the last twenty years, Milian has been bringing that edgy spirit of innovation to sports photography as a staff photographer at Sports Illustrated. He has mounted a remote-controlled camera on the front of a kayak-, dangled from helicopters, and spent a week in the Colombian jungle photographing a boxing dynasty. All the while, though, his work remained grounded in the basics of lighting and composition. He does mostly indoor work for SI, and his photos inevitably capture the defining moment of the action with studio-like quality and precision. Consider his preparation for a basketball game at Madison Square Garden: he arrives at one in the afternoon - five cases of equipment in tow - for a 7 Pm. tip-off. Depending on what hes after, he may set up eight or more cameras - on the catwalk, mounted behind the backboard glass, in the stands, and on the floor. Each is synchronized with his hand-held camera via a Flash Wizard, a radio-controlled device that allows him to get the same shot from multiple angles. Next, a set of strobe lights is set tip in each corner of the court, also synchronized like the cameras. most of srs indoor jobs are shot using strobes rather than natural light. They provide an intense, even light that allows Milian to use fine-grained film and produce higher quality images. The trade-off is that, while his newspaper counterparts using motor drives shoot five frames a second, Milian gets one image every three seconds. “It puts more of a premium on the focus of your assignment,” he says. “We cant just go in and fire away. We have to concentrate on getting the peak action on one shot.”
PhotographOne of the first researchers to produce photographic images using silver halide chemistry was Schultze. As early as 1727, he formed metallic silver images by first reacting solutions of silver nitrate and white chalk and then exposing these solutions to light through stencils. Schultzes work was improved upon through the efforts of Louis Jacques Mand#xE9; Daguerre who, in 1837, developed a process for printing images on a silver coated copper plate. This type of printed image, called a daguerreotype in honor of its primary inventor, is made by polishing and cleaning a silver-coated copper plate and then reacting the silver coating with iodine vapors to form light-sensitive silver iodide. The silver iodide coated plate is then exposed to light through the optics of a camera that projects and focuses an image on the plate. In the ensuing reaction, the silver ions are reduced to silver metal. Finally, the plate is treated with mercury to produce an amalgam. In this type of print, the areas of the plate exposed to light appear white and the unexposed areas remain dark. The problem with this method was that it required long exposure times because the intensity of the image depends solely on the strength of the light forming the image. In 1841, William Henry Fox Talbot overcame this problem by developing a quicker method that did not depend entirely on reflected light to produce the image. He found that silver halide could be exposed in such a way so as to produce a preliminary latent image which required only a small amount of light. This latent image could then be subsequently reacted, without additional light, to produce a final image. Using this technique, known as calotyping, Talbot was one of the first to produce continuous tone images. Unfortunately, these early images were not stable and darkened over time. Fortunately, around the same time Talbot did his work, John Frederick William Herschel discovered a way to stabilize images. His process, known as fixation, chemically converts unexposed silver halide to silver thiosulfate, which can easily be washed off of the image.

FEAR of exploitation and degradation is what inspired Congress in 1872 to set aside 2.2 million acres in three states to preserve the unique volcanic region known as Yellowstone as the worlds first national park. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the measure declaring that the sensitive area, with its roaring geysers and bubbling mud, would forever be set apart “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” Sadly, the short shrift given to Yellowstone, that grand old patriarch of parks, is symptomatic of a neglectful policy being applied to our national treasures across the board. At a time of war and tax cuts and huge deficits, something has to give. And under a spending bill recently approved by the House, a big loser is clearly the nations parks, already woefully underfunded.
In 2004, the EMS team identified its first large-scale initiative–solid waste management. Some of the guidelines introduced include: * Recycling opportunities for visitors. There are currently 63 recycling bins in the park, and it is estimated that there has been a 50 percent increase in the amount of commodities collected in the park, particularly plastics. * Recycling propane cylinders. Through a partnership with Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone and Grand Teton concessionaires, the Yellowstone Park Foundation and various private entities, there is now a program of collecting and recycling propane cylinders in the greater Yellowstone area. The Propane Bottle Recycler (PBR), a mobile propane recycling unit, is now being used to recycle the estimated 3,000, one-pound propane cylinders discarded in the park each year.

WASHINGTON — Construction of new homes and apartments plunged by 17.6 percent in March, the biggest decline in 14 years and another possible indication that rising interest rates are beginning to take a toll on the economy. Meanwhile, wholesale inflation shot up 0.7 percent as energy prices soared. The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that builders started construction on new homes and apartments at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.84 million units in March, down from 2.23 million units in February. “This is a bit of a shocker,” said David Seiders, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders. “But I dont think this represents a fundamental downshift in the housing market. There were special factors behind it.”

coffee machines

CoffeeA driving force behind coffees global popularity is its caffeine content: a six-ounce (2.72 kilograms) cup of coffee contains 100 milligrams of caffeine, more than comparable amounts of tea (50 milligrams), cola (25 milligrams), or cocoa (15 milligrams). Caffeine, an alkaloid that occurs naturally in coffee, is a mild stimulant that produces a variety of physical effects. Because caffeine stimulates the cortex of the brain, people who ingest it experience enhanced concentration. Athletes are sometimes advised to drink coffee prior to competing, as caffeine renders skeletal muscles less susceptible to exhaustion and improves coordination. However, these benefits accrue only to those who consume small doses of the drug. Excessive amounts of caffeine produce a host of undesirable consequences, acting as a diuretic, stimulating gastric secretions, upsetting the stomach, contracting blood vessels in the brain (people who suffer from headaches are advised to cut their caffeine intake), and causing overacute sensation, irregular heartbeat, and trembling. On a more serious level, many researchers have sought to link caffeine to heart disease, benign breast cysts, pancreatic cancer, and birth defects. While such studies have proven inconclusive, health official nonetheless recommend that people limit their coffee intake to fewer than four cups daily or drink decaffeinated varieties.Coffee originated on the plateaus of central Ethiopia. By A.D. 1000, Ethiopian Arabs were collecting the fruit of the tree, which grew wild, and preparing a beverage from its beans. During the fifteenth century traders transplanted wild coffee trees from Africa to southern Arabia. The eastern Arabs, the first to cultivate coffee, soon adopted the Ethiopian Arabs practice of making a hot beverage from its ground, roasted beans.
Overheard at the Reform Club dining room the other day, as a lady diner was ordering her pudding: Diner: Please can you bring coffee with my pudding. Waitress: Im afraid coffee is only served in the lounge. D: Then can you send someone to the lounge to get a cup of coffee and bring it in here with my pudding. W: Im afraid coffee is only served and drunk in the lounge.

Vending Machine Cuisine William R. (Bill) Farhat was a restaurateur in Grand Rapids when some representatives of vending companies asked him if he could make sandwiches for their machines. With a restaurant kitchen, it really wasnt possible, Farhat recalls. But he asked the vendors if preparing food was a problem for them.

Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon
E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. Who is doing this work and making sure that its adequately funded, that they have the ability to do their advertising and to make assistance to businesses.”

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

Children love swimming pools. When used with proper supervision, swimming pools are safe. But when children decide to use swimming pools without supervision, they are dangerous. Each year over 250 children under five years old drown in backyard swimming pools. Most die because no one is watching them. Many of the children accidentally fall in, and no one is there to rescue them. Consumer Reports, 6/97 pp. 8-9.

Landscaping is about all the space I often refer to this classic definition of landscaping, to keep the process in perspective: Landscaping is the arrangement of plant materials — by form, texture and color — in such a way, and on such a scale, that you can walk through it, that it provides a feeling of privacy and creates a sense of “being somewhere.” The following information has appeared here before but is worth repeating for those of you who may have missed it the first time around. It is adapted from information provided by horticulturists at Cornell and Kansas State University.
Its overwhelming and intimidating. Stop by a garden center in spring and youre visually assaulted with color. There are so many to choose from, and each becomes a favorite. Whether or not those preferences are the best choice for your landscape is another matter. Many plantings miss the mark with color thats not quite right. “Color unifies the house with the landscape,” says Catherine Bowen Drewry, a landscape designer in Crawford, Georgia. “People spend a lot of time thinking about the colors inside their home and on the exterior. They need to factor landscape colors into the equation,” she says. Take cues from your architecture. Roof, trim, and house colors are all factors in determining the best palette. Make note of mature trees and shrubs that bloom throughout the year. Their flowers should complement the overall scheme as well. “If your house is orange-based brick, ask yourself how that hot pink crepe myrtle is going to look against it,” Catherine says. “Is it going to pick up a little pink in the brick, or is it really going to clash with it?
