San Diego Commercial Real Estate

With Downtown Rising beginning to ascend, regional malls undergoing reconstruction and redevelopment efforts in progress across the state, Utah is poised for significant commercial momentum and growth. While the real estate market has softened on the residential side, our panel of experts indicated that commercial real estate is holding steady. Noteworthy commercial developments coming on line in northern Utah County coupled with growth in eastern and southern Utah add to the states historically strong retail and industrial markets. Our panel also discussed the impacts of the housing market, tightening lending regulations and opportunities in the suburban market. What is the current state of commercial real estate downtown? How is the City Creek project impacting whats going on? WILMARTH: I think downtown has a lot of excitement right now. We are looking at City Creek as being the impetus of bringing people back downtown. We saw a huge out-migration of tenancy during that time period when light rail and the interstate were being redone for the Olympics. But we see City Creek as being really the force to bring people back, both from a residential standpoint as well as an office standpoint. Now with the construction of 222 South Main, we are finally going to see some class A product thats going to accommodate some of these higher end corporate users that are looking to make a statement. 222 is really the office component of City Creek right now. City Creek is primarily residential and retail and someday probably will accommodate additional offices. This represents a great opportunity for our city to have a resurgence again.

Affordable housing. Low cost of living. High quality of life. The combination of these three things sets the Fort Wayne housing market apart. Add a wide variety of options into the equation and you have a truly good value for your housing dollars. A recent home price analysis by the National Association of REALTORS(R) revealed that the Fort Wayne housing market is in excellent shape, with a potential for significant housing equity gains, a very favorable home price-to-income ratio and an even better mortgage servicing cost-to-income ratio. The same report shows that the region added an estimated 15,000 new housing units in the past five years, approximately 12,000 of which were single-family dwellings. New developments continue to pop up in suburban areas surrounding the city. Conveniently located medical facilities, schools, libraries, parks, retail stores and restaurants add to the sense of community.

HUNTING SEASON DRIVES NORTHWEST COLORADOS ECONOMY Without hunting season, I would not be in business, said Jim Simos, owner of Cashway Distributors in Craig, what Simos calls one of the last of the great general stores of the retail industry. I would not be able to maintain this inventory and would be out of business in a year. Simos has plenty of neighbors who are just as reliant on big-game hunters.
By Lindsey Geisler The Governors Annual Easter Egg Hunt was anything but a sure bet this year. Storms that raged Friday night threatened to continue into Saturday. That would have forced the event to move to a downtown parking garage where candy would have been handed out.
After seeing the picture on page 75 of the October 2005 issue, I beg the question, What on Earth were you thinking?! publishing such a spectacle for the world to see. The photo of target practice to end the life of a defenseless and otherwise benign beast sends all the wrong messages about guns and those who own and use them. I was particularly dismayed because it gives gun owners and users the reputation as senseless takers of life for no other reason but for target practice. Shame on the ones using their weapons this way!

Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
Mary Skiffington has joined the fine homes residential division of Cassidy Associates Real Estate, Inc. Peter Middleton, real estate sales agent for RE/MAX of La Jolla, has been ranked among the top 100 RE/MAX sales agents in California for sales volume from January to June 2002. Gina Drucker and Karen Pado have joined RE/MAX of Rancho Bernardo as a real estate sales team. International Real Estate has added Eric B. Shwisberg as vice president and general counsel.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Being Bullied

January 4th, 2009

In general, children who become the targets of bullies have a negative view of violence and go out of their way to avoid conflict. They tend to be “loners” who exhibit signs of vulnerability before being singled out by a bully. Being victimized leads these children–who are already lacking in self-esteem–to feel more anxious and thereby increase their vulnerability to further victimization. Being the target of a bully leads to social isolation and rejection by peers, and victims tend to internalize others negative views, further eroding their self-esteem. Although bullying actually lessens during adolescence , that is the period when peer rejection is most painful for victims. In a number of well-publicized cases (in Scandinavia, Japan, and Australia, as well as the United States), adolescents tormented by bullies have been driven to suicide .

Evidence indicates that bullying is not a phase a child will outgrow. In a long-term study of more than 500 children, University of Michigan researchers discovered that children who were viewed as the most aggressive by their peers at age eight grew up to commit more (and more serious) crimes as adults. Other studies indicate that, as adults, bullies are far more likely to abuse their spouses and children.

Alternative health practices for livestock.
NORWALK, Conn. — Theres an old tradition in standard medical circles of dismissing so-called alternative medicine as everything from witchcraft to nonsense. The move, the first by a major U.S. health-care company, suggests that the industry is giving some credence to consumer claims that certain kinds of alternative medicine work. In fact, many insurers already cover some types of alternative medicine, such as therapy by chiropractors — although few cover less conventional treatments like herbology, in which herbs are used to treat diseases. “Its really driven by consumer demand,” said Hassan Rifaat, manager of Oxfords alternative-medicine division. Analysts and industry executives say the market for alternative medicine amounts to billions, though the exact amount is up in the air. Norwalk, Conn.-based Oxford pegs the market at about $50 billion; others estimate a more conservative $18 billion to $20 billion. Today, most of that money is paid out of pocket by consumers. Yet, the size of the alternative-medicine market doesnt necessarily translate into a boost for the bottom line of health- care companies or insurers. For example, employers that subscribe to Oxford plans can sign up to provide coverage for alternative treatments by paying a 3 percent increase in premiums, the company said. Even if all Oxford customers added that coverage, it would represent only a small portion of the $1.73 billion in premiums that the company collected in 1995. “Its not an area with any real commercial significance,” said Paine Webber Inc. analyst David Lothson. That could change — or thats what alternative-care providers hope. HMOs now cover 60 million Americans, while another 80 million are covered through other forms of managed care and traditional medical insurance. “As more services are covered, the more alternative treatments people will try,” said Neal Heller, chairman and chief executive of Natural Health Trends Corp., which runs schools that train massage therapists and operates clinics that offer alternative-health treatments. Plenty of people are already convinced that alternative treatments work. The American Chiropractic Association reports that about 20 million people visit chiropractors each year, though only half of the nations HMOs cover those services. Oxford said its recent decision was based on member demand after a tremendous response to an article on the subject in its member magazine. The company, which provides coverage to about 1.4 million people in the eastern United States through its HMOs and other plans, isnt just limiting coverage to treatments now widely seen as effective, such as visits to chiropractors. Included in its new network of 1,000 alternative-medicine specialists are acupuncturists, naturopathic doctors, massage therapists, yoga instructors, clinical nutritionists and registered dietitians, along with a division to sell herbs and holistic devices. It said it also plans to add other services, like the Chinese martial art taichi. Some other health care companies, such as American Western Life Insurance Co. and Kaiser Permanente Health Plans, offer a limited range of alternative-medical services, but none have developed a full network and benefits plan comparable to Oxfords. “Mainstream HMOs and insurers are skeptical,” said Natural Healths Heller. Indeed, more Americans have taken a greater interest in their own health and preventive care, particularly as HMOs strive to cut costs by placing limits on certain types of treatments. “They feel as though modern medicine has failed them,” Heller said. While coverage of alternative treatments is on the rise, it will take several years before theres wide acceptance among benefit plans and insurers, analysts and executives said. When that happens, Heller said, his clinics will be ready.

concrete kerbing

January 2nd, 2009

No retrospective would be complete without remembering the contributions of leading figures who have helped shape the industry. In this issue recognizing todays top contractors (see page 27), it is fitting to salute some of the pioneers from CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONS early days. It was Corbettas dedication to the development of a strong concrete industry, however, that earned him the moniker Mr. Concrete. He was instrumental in founding several organizations, starting in 1950 with the Concrete Industry Board of New York City, which brought together concrete contractors, producers, architects, engineers, testing labs, cement manufacturers, and reinforcing steel producers.
ConcreteConcrete is a hardened building material created by combining a chemically inert mineral aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. Although people commonly use the word cement as a synonym for concrete, the terms in fact denote different substances: cement, which encompasses a wide variety of fine-ground powders that harden when mixed with water, represents only one of several components in modern concrete. As concrete dries, it acquires a stone-like consistency that renders it ideal for constructing roads, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, factories, airports, railroads, waterways, mass transit systems, and other structures that comprise a substantial portion of the U.S. wealth. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), building such facilities is in itself one of the nations largest industries and represents about 10 percent of the gross national product. Over $4 billion worth of hydraulic cement, a variety which hardens under water, is produced annually in the United States for use in $20 billion worth of concrete construction. The value of all cement-based structures in the United States is in the trillions of dollarsroughly commensurate with the anticipated cost of repairing those structures over the next twenty years. The words cement and concrete are both of Latin origin, reflecting the likelihood that the ancient Romans were the first to use the substances. Many examples of Roman concrete construction remain in the countries that encircle the Mediterranean, where Roman builders had access to numerous natural cement deposits. Natural cement consists mainly of lime, derived from limestone and often combined with volcanic ash. It formed the basis of most civil engineering until the eighteenth century, when the first synthetic cements were developed. The earliest manmade cement, called hydraulic lime, was developed in 1756, when an English engineer named John Smeaton needed a strong material to rebuild the Eddystone lighthouse off the coast of Devon. Although the Romans had used hydraulic cement, the formula was lost from the collapse of their empire in the fifth century A.D. until Smeaton reinvented it. During the early nineteenth century several other Englishmen contributed to the refinement of synthetic cement, most notably Joseph Aspdin and Isaac Charles Johnson. In 1824 Aspdin took out a patent on a synthetic blend of limestone and clay which he called Portland cement because it resembled limestone quarried on the English Isle of Portland. However, Aspdins product was not as strong as that produced in 1850 by Johnson, whose formula served as the basis of the Portland cement that is still widely used today. Concrete made with Portland cement is considered superior to that made with natural cement because it is stronger, more durable, and of more consistent quality. According to the American Society of Testing of Materials (ASTM), Portland cement is made by mixing calcareous (consisting mostly of calcium carbonate) material such as limestone with silica-, alumina-, and iron oxide-containing materials. These substances are then burned until they fuse together, and the resulting admixture, or clinker, is ground to form Portland cement.

The UK market for digital CCTV video recorders was virtually non-existent before 1996, when smaller capacity HDDs and high costs made digital recording unattractive when compared with relatively low cost, good quality S-VHS analogue equipment. However, as technological developments have led to significant increases in capacity and picture quality, and costs have become more competitive, the market has increased in value. Ever since analogue CCTV systems first appeared in the early 1970s, recorded images have provided vital evidence in many high profile court cases. CCTV images have given police vital clues in what otherwise might have been unsolvable cases, and have allowed members of the public to assist police in identifying suspects.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

Omega 3 Pregnancy

January 1st, 2009

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. — With growing concerns about treatment of depression in pregnancy, omega-3 fatty acids are gaining attention as a possible treatment that might be without risk and healthful for mother and child, Marlene Freeman, M.D., said at a psychopharmacology conference sponsored by the University of Arizona. Omega-3 fatty acids can become depleted during pregnancy and lactation anyway, so the suggestion that they might play a role preventing depression in pregnancy is even more intriguing–especially with recent research raising concerns of a possible neonatal withdrawal syndrome associated with use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors during pregnancy, said Dr. Freeman, director of the universitys womens mental health program in Tucson. A non-peer reviewed study looking specifically at the role of omega-3 fatty acids in depression among pregnant women and involving nearly 14,000 pregnant British women showed higher depression scores correlating with lower seafood intake. The study indicated a protective effect of omega-3 acids not only at 18 weeks gestation but also at 8 weeks and 32 weeks post partum.

Total Employment Rate An important aspect of economic performance is how the resources are utilised, human capital being societys main resource. Consequently, the employment rate and its development are crucial both for economic growth and social cohesion. The Lisbon European Council stated that more and better jobs should be created and the overall target was to increase the employment rate to 70% by 2010. An intermediate goal for the employment rate was to reach 67% by January 2005. In addition, the re-launching of the Lisbon Strategy by the European Council in 2005, following the mid-term review of the Strategy, has put even more importance and focus on growth and employment.

Thanks to new legislation, IRD compliance, online banking, split payments and the need for report analysis and record keeping, the process of completing business payroll quickly, legally and accurately is becoming increasingly difficult for small businesses. “If you do payroll manually, you will probably do it illegally without meaning to,” says Steve Nathan, managing director of payroll software company Comacc.

Connecting with and tracking job candidates through a recruitment management system that makes full use of Internet technology can improve a companys hiring results. And, it even may lead to a re-engineering of the recruitment process. The applicant management system is geared toward mid-sized organizations hiring between 100 and 500 employees annually. It is a single-source solution; Hotjobs.com handles installation and maintenance of the necessary hardware and software items.
Whether the current job market lacks sufficient candidate resources or is overly supplied with them, make yourself a valuable commodity and take the lead in determining your destiny. Recruiters need people with skills and are competing for them, so it is important to be as selective in choosing a recruiter as you would a new career. Choose a recruiter and build a relationship with them before you actually need them. This process might make the difference between your dream job and no job. * First and foremost look for an ethical recruiter, they do exist. Use your instincts as a guide. If a recruiter tells you that you must sever all ties with other recruitment firms or you cannot interview with companies on you own, your response should be, “Are you guaranteeing me you will find an ideal position for me?” Unethical recruiters use this tactic.

December 29th, 2008

NEW YORK — The popularity of barer looks has turned laser hair removal into one of the fastest-growing nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in recent years, with more than 1.3 million performed in 2005. But consumers also have a growing variety of options for at-home hair removal. Two recent additions to the field include the new Nads Hair Removal Essentials Kit from LifeSource, and a new line of Veet depilatory creams and waxes from Reckitt Benckiser Inc. Veet is stressing personalization with its hair-removal gel creams, which come in three formulations for dry, normal or sensitive skin. Veet Ready to Use Wax Strips, meanwhile, come in resin-based formulations for normal-to-dry skin, and a sugar-based wax designed to reduce the potential for irritation on sensitive skin.
Hair RemoverHair removers, or depilatories, are products designed to chemically or physically remove undesirable hair from areas on the body. Hair removers are made by mixing together the appropriate raw materials in large stainless steel tanks and then filling them into individual packages. In use for thousands of years, they continue to be an important part of many peoples everyday hygiene. Currently, new hair removers are being investigated which are less irritating, more effective, and longer lasting.Epilatories were the first type of hair removers. The most common of these products is an epilating wax. This product is heated and spread on the skin in the desired area. It is then allowed to cool and harden. The mass of wax is then rapidly removed, pulling with it about 80% of the hairs. It is a slightly painful procedure and a mild anti-+ septic is typically applied to protect against skin irritation. Epilatories have not been widely used by individual consumers, how-ever they are popular in beauty salons. While epilatories continue to be an important method of hair removal, depilatories are much more common in personal care. Depilatories rely on a chemical reaction between materials in the formula with components of the hair. When the depilatory is applied to the skin, a component in the product, such as thioglycolic acid, reacts with the protein in the hair and weakens it. The hair can then be removed from the skin by gentle wiping, scraping, or rinsing. This is effective on any part of the hair structure that is above the level of the skin.

Homeowners looking to refurbish their houses but unwilling to use expensive credit cards to finance it will soon be served by a new, locally based loan company specializing in home improvement loans. Jess Chinchillas, founder of the company, recently returned to the county after serving as vice president for The Money Store, a Sacramento-based home lender. The home improvement loan is secured by a lien on the subject property, he added. Since the average home improvement loan is smaller than other kinds of home equity loans, but has just as much paperwork, the points charged are usually proportionally higher, he added.

Two ingredients common in many hair- and skin-care products have been linked to abnormal development of breasts in boys. Lavender oil and tea tree oil con tain compounds that act like female sex hormones and interfere with male hormones, researchers have determined. Enlarged male breasts, or gynecomastia, result from an imbalance between the activity of estrogens, which stimulate breast growth, and estrogen-inhibiting androgens. The condition is extremely rare before puberty, says Denver-area pediatric endocrinologist Clifford Bloch.
Histologic examination revealed an extensive tumor, involving the entire breast, measuring 150 mm in maximum size, and extending to the medial and lateral margins, the dermis of the nipple skin, and within 1 mm of the deep margin. The tumor was composed of single files of large cells with focal targetoid growth around the normal breast structures (Figure, A). The neoplastic cells contained abundant foamy or finely granular pale pink cytoplasm (Figure, A, inset, and Figure, B), with occasional intracytoplasmic lumina identified (Figure, B, inset). The nuclei were uniform and round to oval; they had a fine chromatin pattern and a single prominent nucleolus. Mitotic figures were 4 per 10 high-power fields. Neoplastic cells were seen diffusely infiltrating through adipose tissue in scattered areas, mimicking the appearances of fat necrosis (Figure, C). Foci of lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) (Figure, A, arrows, and Figure, D, inset) admixed with the invasive tumor and in surrounding breast parenchyma were observed. No lymphovascular invasion was seen. Three of 12 lymph nodes examined contained metastatic carcinoma with morphologic findings similar to the primary tumor. Immunostaining for estrogen and progesterone receptors was negative. Immunostaining for HER-2 was strongly and diffusely (3+) positive. Gross cystic disease fluid protein 15 (GCDFP-15) (Figure, C, inset) and androgen receptor were positive, whereas E-cadherin (Figure, D, and D inset), S100 protein, calretinin, a-inhibin, and CD68 were negative in neoplastic cells.Pathologic Diagnosis: Histiocytoid Variant of Lobular Breast Carcinoma

Its a gateway to Latin America and having a hotel in Miami helps to better serve our guests. Its also part of a master plan. Weve owned the 100 acres where the hotel is for a long time, trying to decide how to develop it. Were now planning a shopping and entertainment district there.

Advertising the promotion of goods or services through the use of slogans images and other attention-getting devices has existed for thousands of years but by the late 1990s in the United States it had become ubiquitous permeating almost every aspect of American life. Indeed the most omnipresent trend was the placement of advertisements and logos on virtually any medium that could accommodate them. Advertising and brand logos appeared regularly on T-shirts baseball caps key chains clothing plastic cups and mugs garbage cans bicycle racks parking meters the bottom of golf cups in public restrooms on mousepads in public school hallways and for schools fortunate enough to be located near major airports on school rooftops. The quest for new advertising venues never stopped–advertising has been placed on cows grazing near a highway (in Canada) and on the edible skins of hot dogs.Television screens became commonplace in many places where the audience was captive–doctors offices which were fed specialized health-related programs interspersed with commercials for health-related products airports (fed by CNNs Airport Network) and supermarket checkout counters. Indeed by 1998 place-based advertising defined by advertising scholar Matthew P. McAllister in The Commercialization of American Culture as “the systematic creation of advertising-supported media in different social locations” had reached almost any space where people are “captive” and have little to distract them from the corporate plugs. Advertising had invaded even what was once regarded as private space–the home office via the personal computer where advertisements on Microsoft Windows “desktop” were sold for millions of dollars.
The SLDP sector has invested more than 19.3m [pounds sterling] in brand advertising from January to May this year, which suggests the total spend will go far beyond last years total anual figure of 31.9m [pounds sterling]. TV and press dominated the media spend althrough more brands have adopted the multi-media approach pioneered by the Mullerlove campaign in 2001 * Source NMR 2003, AC Neilsen May 2003
ADVERTISINGThe various delivery mechanisms for advertising include banners at sporting events, billboards, Internet Web sites, logos on clothing, magazines, newspapers, radio spots, and television commercials. Advertising has so permeated everyday life that individuals can expect to be exposed to 1,500 to 3,000 different messages each day. While advertising may seem like the perfect way to get a message out, it does have several limitations, the most commonly noted ones being its inability to focus on an individual consumers specific needs, provide in-depth information about a product, and be cost-effective for small companies.Advertising can take a number of forms, including advocacy, comparative, cooperative, direct mail, informational, institutional, outdoor, persuasive, product, reminder, point-of-purchase, and specialty advertising.

Forty-two percent of all respondents agreed that supermarkets “need less health and beauty and more unique groceries.” (25% agreed strongly.)
A difference of opinion exists in the health beauty care category between retailers and consumers–they agreed on only four of the top 10 brands in the survey. Crest was the only brand to make the Power Brands list for its strength with both retailers and consumers. It was mentioned as a top performer by 21% of retailers and as a preferred brand by 13% of consumers. Conversely, Suave and Colgate were two out of 11 brands that lost standing as Power Brands. Suave had a weak showing with consumers, and Colgate fared poorly with both groups. Suave, however, earned near Power Brand status as did Pantene, both for their strength with retailers.
That trend is evident in Phar-Mor Inc.s newest prototype, a 50,000-square-foot unit with a large beauty care department the deep-discount drug chain unveiled earlier this year. Phar-Mor opened a version of the prototype on the East Coast this summer, marking its first foray into New Jersey. The new store, in Moorestown, is doing some interesting things with skin care.Open-mindedness toward innovation in skin care merchandising is not limited to the chain drug channel. Supermarket retailers, long the also-rans among mass marketers in the category, are beginning to experiment with larger skin care departments and higher-end products. One regional Sunbelt chain plans to increase its skin care mix by a third before the end of this year, with higher-priced facial products it had not carried before accounting for almost all the increase. The retailer also plans to experiment with free-standing skin care displays, end-caps and promotional price reductions this winter. It will double the amount of space devoted to the category in most of its stores and begin running ads devoted solely to skin care for the first time.

detroit charter flights

December 24th, 2008

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Demand for chartered jet flights is up sharply around the country as deep-pocketed travelers try to avoid new security delays at major airports. A charter service in Southern California reported a 110 percent increase in customer calls. A Wisconsin company said customers are booking longer interstate flights normally handled by commercial airlines. And in Brunswick, Maine, Adam Websters charter flight referral service has been swamped for a week. Charter companies — whose planes range from single-engine four- seaters to Boeing 737s with conference rooms and bedrooms — boast of smoother check-ins than larger carriers and a feeling of safety that comes with knowing everyone on a flight. The nations 3,000 charter companies rarely search passengers or their luggage.
FLIGHT DELAYS on some of the leading holiday airlines increased last summer, official figures showed yesterday. There were also increases in the number of late charter flights operated by Monarch, Air 2000, Flying Colours, British Airways and British Midland. Britannia had the fewest flights more than an hour late last summer - 14 per cent, compared with 19 per cent in summer 1998.
GLENDA COOPER Package tour customers from today will be guaranteed cloudless skies to Torremolinos or the Canaries. From now on 90 per cent of Britains charter flights, which account for 10 million travellers every year, will have a smoking ban. The aircraft industrys decision to ban smoking follows the example set by trains, buses, coaches and the underground.

The pool was such a hit that from the day it was opened the town has been buoyed up on a wave of civic pride. Not since the alcoholic dwarf and his convicted paedophile father were bludgeoned to death, mutilated and set on fire by a group of unemployed teenagers have the local townspeople been as collectively exhilarated. Phrases like community spirit and our childrens future are still peppering the letters page of the local paper. Property prices have risen slightly. An ecumenical church service of thanksgiving is being planned. And people of all ages are learning how wonderful it is to be able to swim. Naturally enough, in a rural area such as this, there are people who have had little or no previous experience of either indoor swimming pools or unisex changing rooms. On the very first day, a 57-year-old farm labourer was cautioned by police for allegedly exposing himself in a cubicle. And an unclaimed pair of wellingtons and a decomposing ferret were discovered in a locker after a persistent smell was traced to its source. In the pool itself a 25-year-old supermarket manager sustained a nasty head injury after taking a running dive into the shallow end. When the pool was divided into lanes to cater for the serious swimmers, problems also occurred when new swimmers presumed an entitlement to one lane each on a first-come-first-served basis. I myself was reprimanded and then lightly assaulted by an elderly lady who believed that, by swimming in a lane that was already occupied by her, I had taken a serious liberty. But theres nothing that a few extra signs in the changing room and at the poolside wont sort out.
Spurred by the success of the first volume in its Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine, the International Olympic Committee has initiated a second series of publications to address specific sports activities. This series is aimed at coaches, team doctors, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other health-related professionals with academic preparation in the basic sciences. This book, written by three American authorities on the application of science and sports medicine to swimming, is the first in the series. The first two sections of the book provide an excellent introduction to basic concepts in physiology and biomechanics of importance in swimming. They are logically organized, skillfully presented, and for the most part, well-illustrated. The presentation of complex scientific information in a form that is not only acceptable but attractive to practitioners is fraught with an inevitable tension between simplicity and accuracy. Each attempt to describe a complex process in simple terms is accompanied by a shedding of qualifiers that, if carried too far, threatens the accuracy of the information being presented. The authors have been uncommonly skillful in meeting the challenge inherent in this aspect of their task. A further challenge in presenting such material is to maintain an appropriate balance between theory (or science) and practice. The authors have managed to do this in admirable style, with the practical significance of the theory illustrated convincingly. The remainder of the second section is devoted to a discussion of the techniques used in the four competitive strokes. These are essentially an updated condensation of the corresponding sections of Maglischos popular text, Swimming Faster (Mayfield Publishing Co., 1982), replete with photo sequences, line drawings, and occasional discussions of related research. Although mostly descriptive, these chapters also contain helpful observations on contentious issues and useful insights gleaned from the authors experiences as a college coach. Unfortunately, the photo sequences are no match for the quality of the text. The photography is uneven, with some sequences sharp and contrasting and others out of focus, blurred, and lacking contrast. In addition, the sense of movement that a good photo sequence can convey when laid out appropriately–that is, running from left to right across adjoining pages–is lost when the photos are stacked vertically in a left-right, left-right fashion.
Youngsters are being encouraged to take up swimming this summer. The Temple Park Centre and Hebburn Swimming Pool, in South Tyneside, is offering a discount rate to young children. Under 16s can swim for 50p every Saturday and Sunday until the end of July.

Kitchen. By Yoshimoto Banana. Translated from the Japanese by Megan Backus. New York: Grove Press, 1993. 152 Pages. Kitchen, a short novel, is paired in the same titled book, with a novella of Bananas, Moonlight Shadow. Kitchen chronicles a contemporary young womans journey through the grief and healing process. Banana uses this main character as a vehicle for the reader to view the social change occurring in contemporary Japan. The first person account by the main character, Mikage, describes the loss she feels not only for all the members of her immediate family, but also the larger nuclear family of past generations. The story begins with the death of Mikages grandmother, the last surviving member of her family. Her grandparents raised Mikage, after both of her parents were killed when she was very young, and in her teenage years, her grandfather has also died. As part of her grief process, Mikage is adopted by a very complex and contemporary family, Yuichi, a young man who had befriended Mikages grandmother and Eriko, his transsexual mother. While living with this family, Mikage learns the meaning of joy, finds comfort in belonging to a family, and develops a satisfying career in cuisine. However, her grief and healing process become complicated when Eriko dies and Yuichi succumbs to depression over his mothers death. Because of Erikos and Yuichis generosity and compassion, Mikage is able to reach Yuichi, and in the process, learns a life lesson, finding the necessary balance between suffering and pleasure.

florence RV dealers

Local dealers of recreational vehicles are enjoying double-digit sales increases from 2003. Consumers evidently are not daunted by high fuel prices, but are leery of boarding airlines, preferring to stay closer to home and the areas abundant natural beauty. “We had a record year in 2002 in RV saks, a record year in 2003, a record year 2004. Each year has gotten to be more then the other one,” said Andreas Steinmann, who with his father, Heinz Steinmann, owns Heinz RV at 3200 S. State St. in Salt Lake City. Steinmann, whose 20-year-old firm employs 11 and has annual revenues of about $5 million, said Heinz RV is experiencing a sales increase of close to 50 percent from last year. The National RV Dealers Association reports that RV sales are up 30 percent in Utah and about 10 percent nationally. Kent Richards, president of employee-owned Motor Sportsland, reported a 15 percent increase. Motor Sportsland, 4001 S. State St. is 47 years old and employs 50.
ELKHART, Ind., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ — In the face of todays slowed economy and low consumer confidence, some businesses are still flourishing and setting an example among their peers, exhibiting best practices in their industry. Thats the story behind the dealerships recently recognized as the Top 50 Recreation Vehicle (RV) Dealers in America by RV Business magazine. This program is unique in that it doesnt focus solely on sales. We understand what makes a dealership truly great is not just what it does, but how it gets the job done, explained Sherman Goldenberg, RV Business publisher. RVing offers a special brand of life experiences, togetherness and interaction with the world around us, so successful RV dealers naturally focus on people over products. These dealers were selected for outstanding personal customer service, along with sound business practices and forward-thinking philosophies. The Top 50 was announced in September at a celebration dinner and reception held during the annual Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association (RVDA) convention in Las Vegas, where awards were presented to the Top 50 including the top five Blue Ribbon honorees: Alpin Haus, Amsterdam, N.Y.; Guaranty RV, Junction City, Ore.; Lazydays RV Center, Seffner, Fla.; Mike Thompson RV Center, Santa Fe Springs, Calif., and Tom Johnson Camping Center, Marion, N.C. Among all the applications we received, these five stood out as being something really special, Goldenberg said. All of our winners were chosen because they deserve it, but our Blue Ribbon dealers just knocked our socks off. We are deeply proud to have them represent the RV industry with such excellence, and we want to honor them for it. Tom Johnson Camping Center was also the recipient of the Dave Altman Award, established in memory of the respected southern California dealer and industry activist who passed away in January of 2008. This award is special because its given to someone who embodies the spirit of giving in the industry, from working to make the business end better to building long-lasting personal relationships with each and every customer, stated Goldenberg. We were fortunate to have a guy like Dave Altman in our corner, and similarly, we recognize Tom Johnson Camping Center for being a representative of RVing that we can all really be proud of.
Bob Barouti was doing business in Upland in the early eighties. He had a car lot on Foothill. Leasing was the name of the game at the time, until the laws changed. Dealerships demanded that they be the only businesses that could lease cars. Barouti had about six RVs in the back of the lot, and, as he describes it, the RVs, “like Pacman,” began to take over. Six became 12 and the business evolved. Soon he found a few acres just off of the freeway and moved out on his own. Land became available in Murrieta, and that city welcomed him with open arms and signage variances. The fact that the MurrietaTemecula area has grown so much over the past decade has just added to his success.

Immigration and migration.
WORKFORCE migration has enormous implications for individuals, businesses and governments. Without the appropriate policies in place, the `losing country could find itself caught in a `brain drain situation, where home- grown talent leave the country while the `recipient country will receive an influx of migrants with different cultural and social norms, thus impacting the recipient countrys existing policies. This is why economies worldwide are changing the way they view both incoming and outgoing migration to ensure that they can access the right competencies to grow their economies and be a player in the global game. The world is changing, demographically. Global population is increasing and, as the baby boomers (typically those born between 1946 and 1964) hit their 50s and 60s, the absolute percentage of the aged is on the rise. At the same time, the total number of young people is falling due to flattening or declining birth rates, particularly in developed regions like Europe and North America.

FEBRUARY IS National Pet Dental Health Month, and for good reason. Just like humans, the dental health of our pets is directly linked to their general health and quality of life. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, our pets dental health is the most overlooked aspect of their care, and more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show some signs of gum disease by age 3. We cant check the sink for pink when it comes to our dogs and cats, so what exactly should we be looking for when checking an animals mouth for dental problems? The most common symptom of dental problems in our dogs and cats is bad breath. But dont rely on the breath test alone. The best thing to do is to pull up their lips and look at their teeth and gums. The gums, especially the gum closest to the base of the tooth, should be a healthy pink color and there should be no swelling or bleeding, which would indicate gingivitis. Healthy teeth should be white, not yellowed or discolored, and you should not see any evidence of tartar buildup on the teeth or at the gum line.
